IT services case study

Government

One county in upstate New York faced three challenges. The need to equip county employees with the IT tools and processes necessary to perform key government tasks, the rising labor costs associated with increased salaries and pensions, and the resulting tax burden.

First, we met with several department heads to determine departmental needs and IT usage. We then conducted an audit and documented the current state of IT with the school district. The right amount of strategy to isolate and protect areas like police and emergency services from these two elements, provide flexibility and enhanced services to the majority of voters, and keep everything running smoothly.

Each of these areas was complemented by Nano Power Digital's Remote Managed Services (RMS) and help desk.

Create a strategic plan aligned with the county's current and long-term goals.

Overall improvement of IT services

The IT department of a global utility company encountered several problems:

  • Reducing helpdesk staff turnover and maintaining an experienced internal knowledge base
  • Acquiring hard-to-find high-level talent for specific projects
  • Maintain strict control, but without wasting unnecessary resources on employee monitoring.

We helped find high-level talent, such as analysts, project managers, developers and executives who took care of specific needs. Also, we understand that you don't want to give up the "keys to the kingdom", but also that you need to ensure detailed day-to-day oversight. So through extensive research, Nano determined the most efficient processes that allowed them to maintain the desired control and monitoring.

This global utility company now uses Nano Power Digital to provide managed IT services to more than 5,000 users in multiple locations. Help desk services, desktop support, PC upgrades, project management, data center services and administration are some of the IT services offered.

Point of Sale System

A national leader in Fortune 500 warehouse rental units needed a new point-of-sale (POS) system. With more than 2,000 locations in the U.S. and Europe, an easy-to-understand and easy-to-use front-end was essential. However, the need for simplification did not hide the magnitude of the potential 24/7 workload of 1,000 transactions per presentation that needed to be consolidated each day.

Nano's developers worked with the client's in-house IT team to create a customized POS system that could be used anywhere in the country. The system runs on eight load-balanced servers and is designed to handle more than 1,000 transactions per second. The development work spanned several years and included more than 80,000 man-hours of work. The result is a state-of-the-art, easy-to-use, customer-centric system that covers nearly every aspect of the self-storage rental process.

ASP .NET MVC, Bootstrap, SASS, SQL Server, Entity Framework, Ninject

A global utility company used a legacy application originally created with Microsoft Access to manage a pipeline construction project. This application worked well for several years, but had the following drawbacks:

The original developer died and the application proved difficult to support. When contract prices needed to be updated, the process became labor intensive. Application speed at the host site was acceptable, but access from other sites was slow. The application was single-user and difficult to modify and extend to meet the changing needs of gas and electric construction projects.

Nano developed a new multi-user Microsoft SQL Server database application to provide an easy way to update data when contracts are renewed or revised, adding functionality and improving the use of existing operability. The result is standardized processes across all offices/sites, allowing for more efficient management and lower construction costs. All while improving speed and enhancing data security.

SharePoint and Office 365 adoption

Change is expensive. Not changing can cost more. Given the fluctuating ROI affecting the business, how can you get it right the first time?

An international manufacturing composition needed to upgrade both its existing SharePoint infrastructure and services. A manufacturer was storing important technical drawings and related deliverables in their SharePoint 2003, an older version of SharePoint. As part of our upgrade strategy, we wanted to move to SharePoint Online and Office 365.

Nano reviews, recommendations and test migrations are provided. A proof of concept validated the company's migration strategy. This solution used Metalogix™ Content Matrix to perform both a proof of concept and a final migration.

One of the largest hospitals in the country has dozens of branch offices, each running SharePoint 2010. Most are standalone, but some use common services. The large hospital IT departments, like many others, are overwhelmed with too much to do and not enough resources to do it. Their IT staff knew they needed to move to Office 365, but what if today's busy environment doesn't have time to do it?

Nano's SharePoint consultants carefully assessed the timing issues and implemented recommendations to extend the life of the 2010 product until the hospital was adequately prepared for the transition to Office 365.  Nano provided an assessment of key SharePoint services and made recommendations for performance tuning, capacity planning, backup strategies and hardware changes to improve the performance and stability of the SharePoint server farm.
